Small is beautiful. Small is interesting. Small invites us to look closer.
Velarde is delighted to present Small Things Considered, an exhibition celebrating the quiet power, intimacy and detail of small-scale art. Bringing together 37 established and emerging artists, the exhibition explores what happens when artists are challenged to work within a specific, deliberately limited size.
Far from being studies or stepping stones towards something larger, these are complete and considered works in their own right. Small in scale, but rich in thought, detail and feeling, they invite us to pause, look closer and discover more.
The history of art is filled with small works that command our attention. From intimate paintings and carefully observed drawings to miniature photographs and intricate prints, scale has never been a measure of significance. In many cases, reducing the physical size of a work creates a more personal encounter, drawing the viewer in and encouraging a closer examination of its details.
Small Things Considered brings together painting, collage, photography, tapestry and original printmaking, encompassing approaches from realism to abstraction. The result is a diverse and engaging exhibition that demonstrates just how much can be expressed within a small area. Some works offer a quiet, almost private encounter, others reveal intricate details, textures and layers that only become apparent when viewed closely. Each work asks us to slow down and reconsider our relationship with scale, reminding us that a work of art does not need to be large to make a lasting impression.
At a time when size can often be synonymous with spectacle, Small Things Considered celebrates another kind of impact: quiet, intimate and considered.
