Chris Brook RSW

Chris Brook RSW is a self-taught Scottish artist, painter and printmaker based in the Scottish Borders. His abstract mixed-media paintings combine painting and printmaking techniques to explore rural and urban landscapes, particularly the meeting point between land and sea.

Boundaries and ideas of containment are recurring themes in Brook’s work, inspired by walls, fences, ploughed fields and the structures found within the landscape. He develops a distinctive visual language through textured surfaces, expressive marks and simple, primal symbols scored into the paint.

Brook often allows the process of making to remain visible within his paintings, over-painting and rebuilding surfaces to create layers of texture, depth and visual history. The resulting contemporary abstract artworks balance structure and spontaneity, inviting the viewer to discover their own interpretation.

His work has been exhibited with Visual Arts Scotland and the Royal Society of Scottish Painters in Watercolour (RSW). In 2023, Brook was elected a Member of the RSW.
